Which instrument should I learn?
The choice of instrument is down to you. Things to consider might include the timbre (the sound the instrument makes), the physicality (how you hold the instrument, and how it makes a sound), the genres of music the instrument often plays (classical, pop etc), and the opportunities to play with other people in ensembles (bands, orchestras etc).

What equipment will I need?
You will need an instrument – YMES can provide advice on purchase or hire if required. For most lessons you will also need a tuition book and your teacher will be able to give you more information about this at your consultation lesson. Depending on your instrument you will also need to purchase accessories from time-to-time: reeds for clarinets, strings for guitars, and so on.
Do I have to take exams?
Absolutely not! Our teachers will be happy to prepare students towards exams, where appropriate – but this is the student’s (or parent’s) decision. Exams often provide a good framework for progression though, and your teacher will be able to discuss the options with you.
How long are the lessons?
The standard lesson length is 30 minutes. Adult or teenage students may prefer a 45 or 60 minute lesson.
Do I have to have weekly lessons?
A weekly lesson is the best way to maximise progression in learning a musical instrument. Fortnightly lessons are available for adult or teenage students taking 60 minute lessons and are charged at the same rate as weekly 30 minute lessons. If you require lessons over a defined timespan (for example, additional support in the lead up to an exam or performance), please contact us to discuss your requirements.
